14.09.2024, 10:30 A.M.

Join our Cork Chapter for a visit to Curraghmore Estate, and a tour of Clonegam Church and Portlaw Heritage Centre on Saturday 14th of September.

Curraghmore, seat of the Marquis of Waterford, designed by John Roberts, is a monumental building with a vast forecourt without parallel in Ireland. The building has evolved over the centuries and has rich interior decoration by the leading exponents of the day including the La Francini and a suite of rooms by James Wyatt. The exterior was remodeled in the late nineteenth century by S.U. Roberts. The grounds contain one of the finest shell houses in the country. It houses a statue of its creator, Lady Tyrone, by the celebrated sculptor John van Nost. The demesne is unsurpassed in its size, beauty and extent. It is now the home to the annual music festival ‘All Together Now’. It is one of the few estates to remain under the control of the original family.

Clonegam Church is an eighteenth-century church of the Curraghmore Estate and contains notable funerary monuments including cut-stone tombs, wall monuments, and stained-glass panels. It was renovated in the mid nineteenth century.

Portlaw a pioneer model village created by the Quaker Malcolmsons, with housing for the mill workers featuring the unique ‘Portlaw Roof’. After-school care and health care needs were provided for the workers. There was also a handball court and a concert hall amongst the benefits enjoyed by the workers. Over a thousand workers were employed at the peak of the enterprise.
