Pat Murray will lead a day tour to County Louth visiting neoclassical style Rokeby Hall built for Richard Robinson, Archbishop of Armagh. Initially designed by Thomas Cooley and built c. 1785 by renowned Irish architect Francis Johnston. After this, members will be visiting Townley Hall of which the poet laureate Sir John Betjeman, in a survey of the work of Francis Johnston wrote: “I have seen many Irish houses, but I know none at once so dignified, so restrained and so original as Francis Johnston’s Townley Hall”. After lunch, members will have a chance to see Beaulieu House which is a great example of an early unfortified mansion built in late 17th century. The Irish Georgian Society has supported conservation works at Beaulieu in recent years. Finally, members will visit Dowth Hall built in 1760 by the sixth Viscount Netterville.
