Finding Dublin in the photographic archive: an exploration of the city's Dublin’s architectural heritage through historic photographs by Dr Orla FitzPatrick, Research Fellow, Trinity Long Room Hub Arts & Humanities Research Institute

This is the ninth talk in the Irish Georgian Society and Dublin City Council's talk series, Depicting Dublin: understanding Dublin’s architecture, urban morphology and social history through maps, prints, drawings and photographs.

ABSTRACT: Drawing upon her extensive knowledge of photographic archives, the author of Lost Ireland (Pavilion, 2021) will explore the city’s lost architectural heritage. The capital’s ever-changing streetscape has been recorded in many photographic formats and styles from nineteenth century topographical prints through to snapshots, road surveys and planning documents. She will highlight collections held in national cultural institutions and private collections alongside vernacular and family photographs that have inadvertently captured the city’s buildings.

BIOGRAPHY: Orla Fitzpatrick is a photographic and librarian who has published widely on Ireland’s photographic history. She has a PhD from Ulster University and is currently a research fellow at Trinity College’s Long Room Hub, where she is working on a project on Ireland’s border culture. She has held the position of Librarian at the National Museum of Ireland since 2003. Her article on Lady Louisa Tenison’s collage albums was published in the Irish Architectural and Decorative Studies Vol XIV, 2011.
