Please note: While there is not as much as walking on this tour, it will entail many steps and access to a boat, which some may find challenging. It is important for both you and your fellow travellers that you assess your ability to participate in the trip in advance of booking.

ITINERARY

Wednesday 6 November

11.30 Leave on Ryanair flight FR7235 to Malta

16.10 Arrive and transfer by coach to the GRAND EXCELSIOR HOTEL, located at the entrance gate to Valletta

Leave (on foot) to the Casa Rocca Piccola for a visit to the privately owned palazzo followed by drinks (by kind arrangement with the Marquis de Piro)

20.00 Dinner at the hotel

Thursday 7 November

9.30 Leave (on foot) for a walking tour of Valletta to include the exterior of Parliament House, the New City Gate and the converted site of the Royal Opera House, by Renzo Piano, as well as the Upper Barrakka Gardens with views of the Grand Harbour the fortifications built by the Knights of Malta

Brief stop at the Caffe Cordina, followed by a visit to St John’s Co-Cathedral with masterpieces by Caravaggio

Continue to the Palace of the Grand Master, seat of the Government of Malta and visit the State Apartments and the Armoury

13.00 Lunch at a restaurant

Leave by coach for the ancient site of Hagar Qim, a megalithic temple complex dating from 3600 – 3200 BC

Return to the hotel

20.00 Dinner at a restaurant nearby

Friday 8 November

9.30 Leave (on foot) to walk through Valletta and visit the Victor Pasmore collection

Take the elevator down to the harbour and board the ferry

Disembark at Vittoriosa for a walk through the city

12.00 Lunch privately (by kind arrangement with Richard Wentges)

p.m. Continue (by coach) to Mdina, capital of Malta until 1571, for a walking tour to include St. Paul’s Cathedral

Continue to Palazzo Falson for a viewing of the collection of paintings and decorative arts of furniture, oriental rugs, jewellery and silver

Return to the hotel

Dinner independently

Saturday 9 November

9.00 Leave by coach to visit the San Anton Palace and Gardens, the official residence of the President of Malta (subject to special permission)

Continue for a visit to another 18th century villa

Continue to Naxxar

pm Lunch at the restaurant in the gardens of Palazzo Parisio, and visit the palace privately (tbc)

Return to the hotel

20.00 Dinner at a restaurant

PRICE INFORMATION: Cost per person sharing €1265. Single supplement

€265. Cost includes 4 nights bed and breakfast in 5* hotel as per programme;

local guides; coach transfers; entries to museums, gardens and houses; 3

dinners and 4 lunches and €200 contribution to IGS.

Flights are not included. Suggested flights will be advised by Travel Escapes.
