Tour of Apsley House & The Wellington Arch, 10.30am, Wednesday the 13th of November
Apsley House, built in the 1770s for Henry Bathurst, 1st Baron Apsley by the architect Robert Adam, is a unique surviving example of an aristocratic home in central London. Bought by Irish born Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington in 1817, after which point it underwent extensive refurbishments by the Duke, it is still the London residence of the Dukes of Wellington today. The setting was thought to be one of the finest in London. Attendees will have a guided tour of the house and its special exhibition of uniforms and coronation robes.
Following the house tour there will be a guided tour of Wellington Arch which was built as an original entrance to Buckingham Palace, later becoming a victory arch proclaiming Wellington's defeat of Napoleon. Crowned by the largest bronze sculpture in Europe, it depicts the Angel of Peace descending on the 'Quadriga' - or four-horsed chariot - of War. Its balconies offer glorious panoramas over London and a chance to watch the Household Cavalry on their way to the Changing of the Guard.
