Online Lecture: Magnificence amidst the misery: Queen Victoria visits Ireland

29.09.2020, 15:30 P.M.

Queen Victoria visited Ireland on four different occasions, in 1849 just as the Great Famine was coming to an end, 1853, 1861 and 1900. We look at the preparations made to welcome her on her long-awaited visit; watch as spending spirals almost out of control and feel the excitement of the aristocracy and gentry alike as they await invitations to events celebrating their Queen’s first visit. Paula Lalor received an MA from Maynooth University in 2011 under the supervision of Professor Terence Dooley who founded the Centre for the Study of Historic Irish Houses and Estates. A Kildare woman based at Rhode, Co Offaly, her interest is in the ‘human’ side of history. She continues to study the subject of Queen Victoria’s visits to Ireland with the intention of publishing a book on the subject.

This will be a pre-recorded lecture, a link will be sent via email and the lecture will be available to view for 7 days after.
