Pillars and Pediments (Part II) Walking Tour of South Mall Cork, 10.15am, Saturday 25th of February.
The architecture of the South Mall area ranges from Georgian merchant houses to contemporary architecture. The South Mall developed over time from the eighteenth century onwards. The northern side was first created and its buildings overlooked a canal on what is now the street. Later, the southern side was developed with its fine terrace of Georgian buildings and eventually the canal was filled in to form the street we see today.
The walking tour will be led by Kevin Hurley and will look at some period building exteriors on the South Mall, Parnell Place, Anglesea Street and Grand Parade. Architectural details include fine examples of Neo-Classical and of later Victorian polychrome design. Period features include examples of door-cases, fanlights, pillars and pediments.
Tickets cost €45 (members), €60 (non-members), including lunch and must be purchased in advance.
