Day tip to Melbury House & Mapperton House in Dorset, Tuesday, 8 April

The IGS London Chapter hosts a visit to two very special Dorset houses - Melbury House and Mapperton House.

Mapperton House (pictures) was originally a Tudor manor built on the present site in the 1540s, and part of it remains as the north wing of the present building. This Grade 1 house was largely rebuilt in the 1660s by Richard Brodrepp and has been further altered over the centuries and is considered one of the finest manor houses in the country with award-winning gardens. It is now the home of the 12th Earl and Countess of Sandwich.

Melbury House has been the seat of the Strangways family of Dorset since the estate was acquired in 1500 from William Browning. This outstanding Grade 1 house is currently the home of The Honorable Charlotte Townshend who inherited through her mother, Theresa Fox-Strangways (Viscountess Galway), daughter and heiress of Harry Fox-Strangways, 7th Earl of Ilchester.

This visit will include a two course lunch at The Ollerod, a lovely hotel and restaurant in Beaminster.
