The streets around Dublin Castle and Christ Church are the most ancient, most densely historic arteries of Dublin city. This tour teases out just two or three fascinating strands, from this endlessly complex tapestry. We'll discuss the first-ever play staged in Dublin, the role of power, patronage, and propaganda in Dublin's first two theatres from the mid-1600s and the intense, often fatal politics of the era. We'll also touch on the vanished guild halls in this area, on the legacy of Sheridan and Swift, on the theatre riots of the 1700s, not to mention some savage rivalries, and an accidental, on-stage stabbing!
