Tuesday 26th February – ‘The La Touches: The Rise and Fall of an Irish Huguenot Family’ with John Dillon

This talk will trace the origins of the La Touche family in Ireland from the Battle of the Boyne, through its greatest days in the 18th century, when David La Touche III and the la Touche Bank dominated commerce, with David becoming first head of the newly-founded Bank of Ireland, to the decline of the family in the 19th century, when the La Touche Bank failed to move with the times. Attention will be paid to the chief residences of the family, such as Marlay, Bellevue, Harristown, and town houses in Stephen’s Green (9, 52, 85) and 10 Merrion Square (the Harristown branch). Born to Myles Dillon and Elizabeth (née La Touche) and educated in Ireland, England and America, John Dillon is former Regius Professor of Greek, Trinity College Dublin (1980-20006)
