Trinity College Dublin possesses a great deal of material that is known as the Trinity College collections. Dispersed in different locations throughout the College, some of the constituent parts of the collections are shadows of their former selves. Once the jewels in College’s crown and housed in purpose built, state of the art museums, these collections came to prominence during the nineteenth century. This was the century that witnessed the golden age of collecting and collections worldwide. The focus is on the collections generally, but principally on what became the College teaching collections. These were the botanical, geological and zoological collections. This dissertation describes and analyses the circumstances behind the rise of the collections during the nineteenth century.
